National Eligibility Test is conducted for determining the eligibility of Indian nationals for the Eligibility for Assistant Professor only or Junior Research Fellowship & Eligibility for Assistant Professor both in Indian universities and colleges.

          Now on behalf of UGC, CBSE(Central Board Of Secondary Education) is now conducting NET exam in 79 subjects, through 89 selected coordinating institutions across the country.Candidates who qualify for the Junior Research Fellowship are eligible for doing research in the subject of their post-graduation and are also eligible for Assistant Professor. Awarding JRF and eligibility for Assistant Professor depend on the performance of the candidate in all three papers of NET. Candidates who clears only eligibility for Assistant Professor is not considered for award of JRF.


  • Candidates who have secured at least 55% marks(without rounding off) in Master's Degree OR equivalent examination from universities/ institutions recognized by UGC.
  • Candidates who have appeared or if candidates who pursuing/appearing  final year Master degree examination and whose results is still awaited may also apply. Such candidates are eligible to receive Assistant Prof/JRF only after passing Master Degree.
  • The Ph.D. degree holders whose Master’s level examination had been completed by 19th September, 1991 (irrespective of date of declaration of result) shall be eligible for a relaxation of 5% in aggregate marks (i.e., from 55% to 50%) for appearing in NET.
  • Candidates are advised to appear in the subject of their post-graduation only.

Age Limit & Relaxation:

Junior Research Fellowship :  Maximum of 28 years. 
  • Relaxation : For OBC(Non Creamy Layer)/SC/ST/PWD/WOMEN applicants
Assistant Professor :
    • No upper age limit

    First I 100 60 will be given, out of that have to attempt 50 questions 1hour 15 minutes
    First II 100 50 (all are compulsory) 1hour 15 minutes
    Second III 150 75 (all are compulsory) 2 hour 30 minutes
